Some Thoughts On Brains
There’s so much we don’t know
I understand that science can tell us how complex neural pathways work, can describe the function of the prefrontal cortex, and that a hippocampus has nothing whatsoever to do with a hippopotamus.
But the brain is also the seat of our consciousness and sense of self, our learning, reasoning, thinking, memory, our beliefs. I still have so many questions that I don’t believe science can ever answer.
Why, for instance, do our brains go on bypass when we decide that drugs and surgery supplied to bodies of our young people will somehow “correct” an errant belief in the mind?
What is the mechanism by which the brains of reasonable and kind people fail to recognise the dangers inherent in destroying women’s bodies, boundaries, spaces, sex-specific language, their rights, their visibility?
Why, for instance, do our brains screen our recognition that it is ONLY MEN who gain from a belief in gendered souls? And why do kind and reasonable people (of either sex) go along with it?
Does the BeKInd mantra act like a software patch to correct a “bug” in the system?
What brain area or function is underdeveloped such that a parent might consider stopping their child’s puberty? or taking them to a surgeon to have body parts removed?
Why do we believe that children can consent to consequences that their maturing brains can’t fully comprehend?
Which area of the brain contains our delusions?
How is the brain affected by testosterone? What are the psychoactive effects of these personality and mood changes?
Which area of the brain contains our biases?
Which part of the brain tells itself it’s in the wrong body?
Which area of the brain generates stereotypes reductively, while simultaneously acknowledging the requirement for other people to behave and believe expansively?
How can the brain confuse Self with Others? Or believe that both can be the same?
How does the radicalised gender fundamentalist cortex operate?
TRA brains. Why don’t they have any? Will they have any if/when they have children? Will biological reality awaken a dormant area of their brain?
Why are mens brains stuck in their trousers?
Why are handmaidens brains donated to men?
Was Emerson, Lake & Palmers seminal 1973 album Brain Salad Surgery, a glimpse into the future?
That’s quite enough to be going on with.
A lot of excellent insights. I agree with all of them. Most days I simply tell myself, you can’t make sense of nonsense. And common sense is obsolete. Society is going down a rabbit hole instead of accepting reality and truth. Sad. Tragic.
The male and female brain argument is incredibly circular. How would anyone determine what is a characteristic of a “male brain”? By looking at brains of males, of course! And if a certain characteristic is found in some brains belonging to males, it is by definition a valid characteristic for a male brain to have. The idea that one could have a female brain in a male body would require that you have some other way to define a female brain. Then you end up with incredibly offensive and sexist diagrams like the one here. BTW, I’m a 40-some year old straight mom of 2, and I meet 2 of the criteria for a female brain and 3 of the criteria for a male brain in the graphic.
